Firewall
A firewall is a part of a computer system or network that is designed to block unauthorized access
while permitting authorized communications. You may either completely open the
firewall, i.e. remove the firewall, or only allow a specific signal to pass
through the firewall, a firewall pinhole.
Remove the firewall under Windows XP:
-
Open the Firewall control panel via › Start › Control Panel › Windows Firewall ›,
or by typing “firewall.cpl” in the Run command on Start menu.
-
Turn off the firewall.
Remove the firewall under newer Windows:
-
Open the “Windows Firewall with Advanced Security” dialog via the ‹Windows logo›
Control Panel › System and Security › Windows Firewall › Advanced settings › or by
typing “wf.msc” in the Run command on Start menu.
-
In the left pane, click “Windows Firewall with Advanced Security on Local computer”.
-
In the “Action” pane on the right, click “Properties”.
-
Turn off the firewall for the desired profile.
Firewall pinhole under Windows XP:
-
Open the Firewall control panel via › Start › Control Panel › Windows Firewall ›,
or by typing “firewall.cpl” in the Run command on Start menu.
-
Define a port exception:
-
select the “Exceptions” tabsheet
-
click [Add a port]
-
type “Aladdin” for the name, type “3047” for the port select
“UDP” for the protocol.
Firewall pinhole under newer Windows:
-
Open the “Windows Firewall with Advanced Security” dialog via the ‹Windows logo›
Control Panel › System and Security › Windows Firewall › Advanced settings › or by
typing “wf.msc” in the Run command on Start menu.
-
Define a new Inbound Rule:
-
in the left pane, click “Inbound Rules” ;
-
in the “Action” pane on the right, click “New Rule” ;
-
select “Port” for the type of rule, then click [Next]
-
select “UDP” for the protocol and “Specific local port”,
type “3047”, then click [Next]
-
select “Allow” for the action mode, then click [Next]
-
check box of the profile you want to extend, then click [Next]
-
type “Aladdin” for the name, then click [Finish].
Note: by default, the Outbound connections are set to “Allow (default)” and the Inbound
connections are set to “Block (default)” which means that, without a specific rule, a
signal can not reach your computer, but your computer can always send any kind of signal to other
computers.
“HL-Server” service & DEP (mainly with Windows 64)
Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature included in modern Microsoft Windows operating
systems that is intended to prevent an application or service from executing code from a non-executable
memory region.
By default, on Windows 64 systems, DEP will prevent the “HL-Server” service from starting.
The solution is to define an exception for the “HL-Server” service in the Performance Options
panel.
-
Access the System Properties panel via › Start › Control Panel › System ›.
-
Select the “Advanced” tabsheet.
-
Open the Performance Options panel with a click onto the [Parameters] button under
“Performances”.
-
Select the “Data Execution Prevention” tabsheet.
-
Click [Add…].
-
Select the “hls32svc.exe” file under “%WINDIR%\SYSwow64”.
-
Click [Apply] in the Performance Options panel.
-
Open the Windows Services panel to start the “HL-Server” service.
Note: “%WINDIR%” is usually “C:\Windows”, and the file to select is then
“C:\Windows\SYSwow64\hls32svc.exe”.
